Modified Build Alternative 3

As of early 2023, the Texas Department of Transportation has narrowed down their plans to expand IH-35 through the city of Austin to two options. The favored option is “Modified Build Alternative 3”.

The proposal as it stands now would appropriate 42 acres of land and displace and destroy roughly 107 homes and businesses. The current highway will no longer exist following construction, with much of the road being sunk below ground level through downtown, in addition to the destruction of the infamous upper decks which opened in 1975.

This is an exploration of time and space. It is a look into the past, an examination of the present, and, before the future comes, a documentation of the space as it is now.

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025.
